When you install applications on Windows, some programs ask whether you want to create a shortcut on your desktop. But this is not the case in Linux.
But if you're a fan of this feature, let me explain how you can add desktop shortcuts to your favorite apps in Ubuntu and other Linux distributions.
If you're wondering what my desktop looks like, I'm using the Ant theme with the Tela icons. You can also get some GTK icons and icons for Ubuntu and change them as you like.
Personally, I am the best Ubuntu Operator for app shortcuts. If you use a program frequently, add it to the player. But I know that not everyone has the same preference and that some people prefer shortcuts on the desktop.
To see the simplest way to create a shortcut for the application on the desktop.
Main Condition
First of all, make sure that the icons are allowed on the GNOME desktop.
If you follow the Ubuntu 18.04 customization tips, you know how to install the GNOME TWEAK TOOL. In this tool, make sure that the "Show Icons" option is activated.
Once you confirm this, it's time to add some application shortcuts to your desktop.
Step 1: Locate the files. desktop applications.
Go to Files -> Other -> Computer. in a file manager like thunar for ex.
From here, go to the usr -> share -> directory of applications. You will see icons of various Ubuntu applications that you have installed here. Even if you do not see the icons, you should see the desktop files that are named app.desktop.
Step 2: Copy the file. desktop to desktop
Now all you have to do here is find the application icon (or your desktop file). When you find it, drag and drop the file onto your desktop or copy the file (using the Ctrl + C shortcut) and paste it to your desktop (using Ctrl + V shortcut)
Step 3: Run the desktop file
When you do this, you should see a text file type icon on the desktop instead of the application logo. Do not worry, things will be different in an instant.
What you need to do is double click on this file on your desktop. It will warn you that it is an "untrusted application engine", so you must click Trust and launch.
The app will start as usual, but the good thing is that you'll notice that the .desktop file is now the application icon. I think you like application shortcuts this way, right?
Troubleshooting for Ubuntu 19.04 or GNOME 3.32 users
If you are using Ubuntu 19.04 or GNOME 3.32, it is possible that a file will not start. desktop at all. You must right-click the .desktop file and select Allow Startup.
After that, you must be able to start the application and the application shortcut should display correctly on the desktop.
conclusion
If you do not like a particular app launcher on your desktop, just select and delete it. The shortcut will be removed, but the app will remain secure in your system.
I hope this quick tip is useful, and you can now enjoy application shortcuts on the Ubuntu desktop.
