We wrote about tools. e.g. ISO Image Writer, Fedora Media Writer, and Etcher, allowing you to bootable flash drives. But even they have problems in my experience that make flash drives and memory cards bootable with Windows.
The instrument that we present to you today is able to accomplish this feat without stress; it is called WoeUSB.
WoeUSB is a Windows USB stick installer Linux instrument from a true Windows DVD or Image. It includes two programs, Woeusb and Woeusbgui. It is a fork of WinUSB software from Congelli501 that got its last update in 2012.
Woeusb is a CLI tool that creates a bootable USB storage device for Windows installation from either a current Windows installation or a disk image. Woeusbgui (as the name indicates) is a WxWidgets-based woeusb GUI wrapper.
- WoeUSB FOSS features: WoeUSB is free to download from GitHub with its source code.
- Windows Vista, Windows 7, Window 8, Windows 10 (all languages and variants) and Windows PE are supported by WoeUSB.
- Escalation of privilege: uses pkexec instead of gksudo.
- Supported boot mode: boot mode compatible with legacy / MBR-style / IBM PC.
- Native UEFI booting (except that the target filesystem can only be used by FAT).
For Ubuntu 14.04 and Ubuntu 16.04 to 17.04, WoeUSB is accessible for simple download (thanks to the primary PPA of WebUpd8). Linux Mint 17.x and 18.x are also supported by the same PPA. Enter and install WoeUSB with the following instructions to add the PPA:
- [sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
- sudo apt update
- sudo apt install woeusb]
If you are only interested in testing WoeUSB without adding PPA to your repo, then use the connection below to grab and install your latest.deb.
Have you got to know WoeUSB? In the comments chapter below, share your knowledge and/or issues with us.
